Sonoma County attracts global wine lovers with new brand identity by Landor

SAN FRANCISCO (16 August 2012) – Landor, a global creative community of strategists and designers, today announced the launch of a new brand identity for Sonoma County. The brand identity was created in collaboration with the leadership of Sonoma County Vintners, Sonoma County Winegrape Commission, and Sonoma County Tourism Bureau.

A varied, growing wine region in northern California, Sonoma County is a perfect destination for wine loving, experience seekers. The new identity is reflective of the rich heritage of Sonoma County: adventurous, genuine, and independent.

Reminiscent of a vintage stencil, Sonoma County’s new brand identity conveys the high quality and skilled craftsmanship of the wines and local foods produced in the region. Inspired by the natural elements found throughout the County, Landor created three distinct color variations for the identity: wine, dark brown, and orange. The identity is supported by brand values and a brand essence that ensure a consistent personality for the brand across all points of touch.

Long beloved by both Californians and wine connoisseurs alike, Sonoma County is enjoying an increase in visitors that appreciate the region’s authenticity and diverse landscape. To build upon that, Landor leveraged a brand essence that represents the County and fulfills visitors’ desire for discovery and memorable experiences they can draw from long after the visit is over.

“Through our brand essence work, we defined the character of Sonoma County as genuine, independent, and adventurous,” said Honore Comfort, executive director of Sonoma County Vintners. “Likewise, our core audience can be described as ‘experience seekers’ – people who are confident, independent thinkers with natural curiosity and a sense of discovery, who like to try new things. This is the audience we want to reach, and we feel like Sonoma County is a great match for them.”

Representing more than 175 wineries in the county, Landor partnered with Sonoma County’s Vintners, as well as the Winegrape Commission, and Tourism Bureau to create a brand identity that could be applied universally throughout Sonoma County—on marketing materials for each organization, merchandise, and on the labels and bottles of locally produced wine.
